Jessica Kowal is a consultant in Tokyo, Japan, for the Albright Stonebridge Group, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s Washington, D.C., global-strategy firm. As a freelance writer, Kowal has contributed to The New York Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Self, Salon.com, Parenting, and GQ. In Tokyo, she is also a contributing editor for Kateigaho International Edition (KIE), an English-language magazine about Japanese arts and culture.

Kowal was a staff writer for Newsday in New York City and on Long Island for 10 years, and she was on the Newsday team that won a 1997 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the crash of TWA Flight 800. In today’s Executive Women program, Jessica shares with us some of her fascinating experiences when working in media field. She introduces her background, her career path and what took her to win Pulitazer Prize. Before founding Silverbirch Associates in 2008, Ms. Bader-Johnston held senior roles in a number of leading companies over a span of 25 years in Japan, including: Director of Communications for IBM Japan, Vice President Operations Finance and Resources, Goldman Sachs Japan, Head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, British American Tobacco Japan, and Head (Japan, Australia, Taiwan) of Corporate Affairs for Standard Chartered Bank.
She has also served in the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo as a senior program officer in Communications and Culture, and has worked with Japanese local government since arriving in Japan in 1984. She is an active speaker, writer, panel moderator and university, lecturer on topics related to CSR and sustainability, globalization trends, and doing business in Japan. She holds an MBA in International Business from McGill University.
